A Must Try Delicacies in Southern Leyte

      Among the six provinces of Eastern Visayas, Southern Leyte is one of the provinces. It was highly known for having a culture of being hospitable. Aside from that Southern Leyte has numerous waterfalls, white sand beaches, hotels, resorts and restaurants that would cater and satisfies customer’s preferences and make as one of the memorable stay among guest. Foods in Southern Leyte is not just a necessity but it represents culture and tradition. Along the travel, foods must be on the list considering that Southern Leytenos has a lot t offer and here are the Top 10 on the list of their delicacies.


     1.  Tres Maria's
               A rice delicacy or kakanin, it is called suman in some municipality of Southern Leyte. Tres is a well known delicacy originated from Ichon Southern Leyte and it cost 6 pesos per piece.

1    2. Hopia
              It is primarily made of dough and a filling made of caramelized muscovado sugar. Hopia is freshly made in the municipality of Malitbog Southern Leyte. It serves as a pasalubong when you are travelling from Malitbog to your hometown.

 3.  Banagan
                A freshwater lobster specialty in Silago Southern Leyte, the farthest municipality of the province. It is perfect for special events such as barrio fiesta, weddings, birthdays and many more. It turns orange and it is crispy when cooked.

4. Budbud
         A sticky rice delicacy cooked with coconut milk and wrapped in banana leaves then steamed. It is a specialty in Padre Burgos Southern Leyte which is the second municipality of Maasin City in the South West.

5. Bocarillo
        A sweet delicacy made of grated young coconut milk and it is combined with white sugar, milk and eggs giving it a white color. It is similar to bukayo in Pangasinan but in Pangasinan they used brown sugar instead of white. Bocarillo was a well known delicacy in Maasin City.

6. Ampaw
        A famous specialty in Pintuyan  Southern Leyte. It is commonly called rice puff, it is made of dried rice fried with an oil and mix with syrup (sugar and water) which makes it sweet and crispy.

7. Bibingka
        A rice cake made of rice flour, sugar and coconut milk. It is baked with a banana leaves that produces a very unique taste. Bibingka in Hanginan is different among other similar delicacy because it is freshly baked in pugon. A small oven made of clay.

8. Kutsinta or Kuchinta
        Kutsinta or kuchinta is a rice cake type of “kakanin”. That is sticky and chewy. It uses lye water as an ingredient.

9.  Kabkab
           It is made of dried grated cassava crops and it is best served with syrup (sugar and water).

10. Linupak/Nilusak na Saging
             Linupak na saging also known as nilusak in Southern Leyte. A native delicacy that is made of banana, grated coconut and sugar. It needs a big wooden mortar to mash the bananas.
